Data privacy at Throne: What data we collect and why

At Throne Labs, we're on a mission to provide clean, accessible bathrooms for everyone. To do this effectively, we use data in smart ways. It is part of our core values to be transparent about what information we collect, how we use it, and how we protect your privacy. Let's break it down!
What personal information do we collect?
Throne collects minimal personal information when you use a Throne:
- If you use our app or text message service, we collect your phone number.
- For Throne Tap Cards, we don't collect any personal information ourselves - the organizations that distribute the cards will ask for a name, but we don't ask for or receive that information.
That's it! We don't collect or store names, email addresses, or any other personal details unless you contact our support team directly.
How do we use this information?
We use the phone number or Tap Card ID to create a unique, anonymous user ID. This ID is stored securely and helps us:
- Ensure accountability. Most people take great care of restrooms, but the few that don't, ruin them for all. By assigning an anonymized user i.d., we are able to warn users or restrict future access if someone misuses a Throne.
- Improve our service. Throne uses data about when and how often our restrooms are being used to inform cleaning and regular maintenance schedules - all in an effort to keep Thrones delightful and available when you need one.
What about location data?
When you use our app, we do need access to your location data, but for good reason!
This feature ensures you can only open a Throne when you're actually nearby – preventing someone in California from accidentally opening a Throne in DC, for example. It's a crucial part of how we keep our bathrooms secure and available for those who truly need them.
Don't worry, though – we only access your location when you're actively using the app, and we never track your movements outside of Throne usage. It's all about getting you to a clean bathroom as efficiently as possible when nature calls!
What about other data?
Our Thrones have sensors that collect non-personal data like:
- Door status (open/closed)
- Occupancy
- Power levels
- Air quality (smoke, monoxide detector)
- Temperature
- Water levels
This information helps us keep Thrones clean, functional, and comfortable. For example, if the temperature rises or drops more than expected, we can send a tech out to assess the HVAC to ensure comfort and functionality.
How we protect your information
Your privacy is important to us. Here's how we safeguard your data:
- We anonymize all phone numbers into user IDs in our system.
- We never sell your personal information to anyone.
- We don't share personal data with our customers (like cities or businesses that host Thrones).
- All data is encrypted and stored securely.
What we don't do
We want to be clear about some things we absolutely don't do:
- We don't use your data to sell you anything or market to you.
- We don't use your location outside of Throne usage.
- We don't collect any biometric data.
Keeping bathrooms delightful for everyone
By using data responsibly, we can ensure that every Throne is clean, safe, and ready when you need it. Our goal is to expand access to delightful bathrooms, and smart data usage helps us do that efficiently and effectively.
Still have questions about our data practices? You can read our full Privacy Policy here.
By balancing innovation with privacy, we're working to create a world where clean, accessible bathrooms are always within reach. Thank you for trusting Throne with your bathroom needs and data. We'll continue to work hard to earn that trust.
